Perception of Gradient in Haptic Graphs by Sighted and Visually Impaired Subjects
نویسنده
چکیده
We report an experiment that presented visually impaired and sighted users with virtually rendered haptic two-line graphs of various orientations. Participants made a forced-choice decision on whether a stimulus was convergent, parallel, or divergent. The use of complex linear haptic graphs was investigated. Possible variations in performance patterns for overall two-line orientations of 0 (vertical), 30, 60, and 90 (horizontal) were explored in view of any haptic oblique effect. No difference between visually impaired and sighted participants was found. Overall orientation and degree of convergence showed an effect. The results are discussed in view of using forcefeedback devices in data visualisation for the blind.

Haptic identification of raised-line drawings when categorical information is given: A comparison between visually impaired and sighted children
Research into haptic picture perception has mostly concerned adult participants, and little is known about haptic picture perception in visually impaired and sighted children. In the present study, we compared 13 visually impaired children (early blind and low vision) aged 9-10 years and 13 agematched blindfolded sighted children on their ability to identify raised-line pictures of common objec...
متن کاملHaptic perception of the horizontal by blind and low-vision individuals.
We examined haptic perception of the horizontal in visually impaired people. Blind people (late blind and congenitally blind), persons with very low vision, and blindfolded sighted individuals felt raised-line drawings of jars at four angles. They had to demonstrate their understanding that water remains horizontal, despite jar tilt, by selecting the correct raised-line drawing given four choic...
متن کاملTangible pictures: viewpoint effects and linear perspective in visually impaired people.
Perception of raised-line pictures in blindfolded-sighted, congenitally blind, late-blind, and low-vision subjects was studied in a series of experiments. The major aim of the study was to examine the value of perspective drawings for haptic pictures and visually impaired individuals. In experiment 1, subjects felt two wooden boards joined at 45 degrees, 90 degrees, or 135 degrees, and were ins...
متن کاملHaptic Object Recognition is View-Independent in Early Blind but not Sighted People.
Object recognition, whether visual or haptic, is impaired in sighted people when objects are rotated between learning and test, relative to an unrotated condition, that is, recognition is view-dependent. Loss of vision early in life results in greater reliance on haptic perception for object identification compared with the sighted. Therefore, we hypothesized that early blind people may be more...
متن کاملComparison of the traumatic dental injuries between visually impaired and their peer sighted children in Kerman, Iran
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Trauma is a common problem among blindness and visually impaired children. The purpose of the current study was the assessment of the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries and the enamel defects resulted from these injuries among 6-12 years old blind children in comparison to the sighted children in Kerman. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, sample size was considered...
